Yes, actually, it can for the on-line Sitemap. If you have GT-NextGEn installed, you can write your own GT-Sitemap.php file and most likely you wouldn't even need any additional .htaccess statements. This is what I have done, but I only included the modules that I have activated within the sitemap tool.

Now, for the Google sitemap submission, I have not shortened the URLs at all.
