By the way, another option might be to place a FULLTEXT index on the table/columns of interest and then use word searches.

If you can figure out an appropriate regular expression, it might be possible to use MySQL's regex capabilities:

If it is possible to change the skin, then I would think it should be a setting that is site wide, not just for the News module.
