What is a Google Sitemap / sitemap.xml?

A Google sitemap is a specially formatted file, often named sitemap.xml, used by Google to quickly identify the pages on a website.  Currently in Beta, the Google Sitemap program has proven to be very effective at quickly improving inclusion for new sites, page ranking, and saturation.
